True liver function tests: what results can show

A panel may include enzymes released when liver cells or bile ducts are irritated, bilirubin linked with bile processing, and proteins made by the liver. One abnormal result does not identify a single diagnosis. Results can change with medicines, alcohol, infection, muscle injury, weight-related liver disease, or temporary illness. Hepatitis A, B, and C are different infections and require different assessment. The pattern across results, symptoms, previous tests, and examination is more useful than reading one value alone.

Ask whether you need to fast and provide a complete list of prescribed medicines, supplements, and non-prescription products. Do not stop a medicine unless the prescriber tells you to. Share relevant alcohol use and any history of hepatitis or liver disease honestly; this helps interpretation and support. If results are outside the expected range, your clinician may repeat the panel, review medicines, request imaging, or arrange tests for a specific infection or cause.

Seek urgent care for yellowing of the eyes or skin with confusion, severe drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or intense right-sided upper abdominal pain. Contact a clinician promptly for new jaundice, dark urine with pale stools, persistent vomiting, or unusual bleeding. A result alone may need review even when you feel well, so keep follow-up appointments.
