What should you know about tronchial bursitis?

Short answer
Tronchial bursitis usually refers to irritation of a fluid-filled bursa near the outer hip, causing pain or tenderness that can worsen with pressure, walking, stairs, or lying on that side.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common location
- The outside of the hip, sometimes extending along the outer thigh
- Often aggravated by
- Direct pressure, stairs, walking, or repeated hip loading
- Helpful next step
- Assessment and a gradual activity and strengthening plan
What it means
A bursa is a small, slippery sac that helps tissues glide over one another. Around the hip, irritation can develop after repeated loading, a change in activity, a knock, or pressure from sleeping on the painful side. The discomfort may spread down the outer thigh, but it does not usually travel below the knee.
A clinician may examine your walking pattern, hip movement, strength, and the precise area of tenderness. Similar symptoms can also come from tendons, the lower back, or the hip joint, so an examination helps distinguish these causes. Imaging is considered when the diagnosis is unclear, symptoms persist, or another injury needs checking.
What you can do
Temporarily reduce activities that repeatedly trigger the pain, while keeping gentle movement within a comfortable range. Avoid lying directly on the sore side; a pillow between the knees may reduce pressure when lying on the other side. Ice wrapped in a cloth can be used for short periods after aggravating activity.
A physiotherapist can guide gradual strengthening of the hip and trunk muscles, review movement habits, and help you return to walking, work, or sport. A clinician may discuss anti-inflammatory medication when it is suitable for you; these medicines are not appropriate for everyone. If symptoms remain troublesome, options can include a cortisone injection. Joint aspiration is generally considered when fluid needs to be assessed or removed for a specific clinical reason.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical assessment if outer-hip pain keeps returning, limits sleep or walking, or does not settle after reducing the provoking activity. Seek prompt care if the area becomes hot, markedly red, rapidly swollen, or unusually tender, or if you develop fever or feel acutely unwell. Get urgent help after a significant fall if you cannot put weight on the leg, or if the leg looks shortened or misshapen.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could the pain be coming from the bursa, a tendon, the spine, or the hip joint? Which activities should I modify, and which exercises are appropriate now? Would medication or an injection be suitable with my medical history? What changes should prompt an earlier review?

Questions people ask
Can I keep walking with tronchial bursitis?
Gentle walking may be reasonable if it does not increase symptoms during the activity or leave a clear flare afterward. Reduce distance, hills, or pace temporarily if those changes provoke pain.
Is an injection always needed?
No. Many treatment plans begin with activity adjustment, targeted exercise, and pain-relief advice. An injection may be discussed when symptoms remain limiting after assessment and conservative care.
Why does lying on the hip hurt?
Direct pressure can compress the irritated bursa and nearby tissues, making side-lying uncomfortable even when the hip moves reasonably well.
