What should you know about troch bursitis?

Short answer
Troch bursitis describes irritation around the outer hip bursa, often producing tenderness when you lie on that side or load the hip.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Short name
- Troch refers to the trochanter
- Typical site
- Outer upper thigh and hip
- Useful change
- Reduce direct pressure while staying gently active
The area involved
Troch is short for trochanter, the bony point on the outside of the upper thigh. A small bursa cushions movement between nearby tissues. Friction, pressure, a direct impact, or changes in the way you walk can irritate it. Pain may spread a short distance down the outer thigh and can be worse on stairs, hills, or when rising after sitting.
A physical examination helps separate bursal pain from tendon, hip-joint, or lower-back problems. Swelling may be subtle, so the absence of a visible lump does not settle the diagnosis.
Practical next steps
Temporarily reduce hills, side-lying pressure, and other movements that reproduce the pain. Keep comfortable walking and gentle range-of-motion work if symptoms allow. Place a pillow between your knees at night and use a cold pack with a barrier for short periods. A clinician may recommend anti-inflammatory medication, physiotherapy, or a cortisone injection after considering your medical history.
When to seek care
Book a review when pain interferes with sleep, work, or normal walking, or when it is not settling with simple changes. Get prompt medical help for fever, hot red skin, sudden severe pain, inability to bear weight, or new leg weakness or numbness.
Questions for your doctor
What structure is causing my outer-hip pain? Which movements should I pause, and which exercises are suitable? Could medication or an injection interact with my other health conditions? When should the diagnosis be reconsidered?

Questions people ask
Is troch bursitis only caused by exercise?
No. Pressure, a knock, altered gait, tendon irritation, and everyday loading can all contribute.
Should I avoid all activity?
Usually not. Modify painful loading and keep gentle movement that does not cause a clear flare.
