Trichomoniasis Without Symptoms: What to Know

Trichomoniasis is an infection caused by a parasite that can affect the vagina, vulva, urethra or penis. Some people notice discharge, itching, irritation or discomfort when urinating, while others feel well. Lack of symptoms does not show whether the infection is present or whether it can be passed to a sexual partner.

A clinician may recommend testing based on sexual exposure, a partner's result, symptoms that come and go, or another sexually transmitted infection assessment. Testing may use a vaginal swab or urine sample, depending on the service and your anatomy.

Arrange a sexual health or gynaecology assessment if you have had a possible exposure or a partner has been diagnosed. Avoid self-treating with thrush products because they do not treat trichomoniasis. If the test is positive, take the medicine exactly as prescribed and follow advice about avoiding sex until treatment guidance has been completed.

Ask whether current or recent sexual partners need assessment and treatment. Using condoms can reduce transmission, although no method removes every possibility of infection. A clinician may also discuss testing for other sexually transmitted infections.

Seek prompt medical care for lower abdominal or pelvic pain, fever, pain during sex, unusual bleeding, or symptoms that become severe. These features can indicate a complication or another condition needing assessment. Arrange testing soon after a known exposure even if you feel normal.

Ask: Which test is suitable for me? Should my partner or partners be tested? When is it safe to have sex again? Do I need follow-up testing if symptoms return? Could another infection explain discharge or itching?
