What should you know about trichomoniasis without discharge?

A person with trichomoniasis may instead notice itching, burning, vulval soreness, pain while urinating, or discomfort during sex. Others notice nothing unusual. Not having discharge does not exclude the infection, and having discharge does not prove it, because several vaginal conditions can look alike.

A clinician can ask about symptoms and sexual exposure, examine the area when needed, and arrange a swab or urine test. Do not rely on smell, colour, or the amount of discharge to decide whether testing is needed.

Arrange testing with a sexual-health or gynaecology service if a partner has trichomoniasis, you have genital irritation, or you are worried after sexual contact. If the test is positive, take the prescribed treatment as directed and follow advice about partner assessment and avoiding sex during treatment.

Use water or a mild, unscented cleanser externally and avoid douching, scented products, and unprescribed vaginal medicines. These measures may reduce irritation but do not treat the infection.

Seek prompt assessment for pelvic or lower-abdominal pain, fever, sores, unusual bleeding, pain during pregnancy, or worsening urinary pain. Severe pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding requires urgent help. The absence of discharge should not delay care when a warning sign is present.

Ask which test is best without discharge, whether other infections should be ruled out, how partners should be treated, and when you can resume sexual contact.
