What should you know about trichomoniasis vulva?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a microscopic parasite. Irritation may be felt on the vulva, around the vaginal opening, or inside the vagina. You may notice redness, discomfort during urination or sex, or an unusual discharge. Some people have no symptoms, so the appearance or feel of the vulva cannot diagnose the infection by itself.

Vaginal itching and discharge can have several causes, including other infections or skin irritation. A clinician can choose a swab or urine test that fits your symptoms and circumstances.

Arrange a sexual-health or gynaecology appointment for testing, especially after sex with a partner who has an infection or when symptoms persist. If testing confirms trichomoniasis, take the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and avoid sex until your clinician says it is appropriate. Partners may also need assessment and treatment so the infection is not passed back and forth.

Wash gently with water or a mild, unscented cleanser. Avoid douching, fragranced products, and self-treating with leftover medicine, because these can worsen irritation or hide useful examination findings.

Seek prompt medical care for pelvic or lower-abdominal pain, fever, sores, unusual bleeding, pain during pregnancy, or symptoms that become severe. Get urgent help for severe pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding. These warning signs need assessment because they can signal a problem requiring care beyond treatment for trichomoniasis.
