Trichomoniasis and the eye

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection that usually involves the genital area. Eye irritation, redness, discharge, light sensitivity, or blurred vision should not be assumed to be ordinary trichomoniasis symptoms. Eye complaints can have several causes and may need an eye examination, especially after contact with sexual fluids.

Genital symptoms can include unusual discharge, itching, soreness, burning with urination, or discomfort during sex, although some people have no symptoms. For background on those complaints, see Vaginal Discharge or Vaginal Itching. A genital test cannot by itself explain every eye problem.

If an eye was exposed to sexual fluids, rinse it gently with clean water and avoid rubbing it or sharing towels. Contact a clinician promptly for advice, and mention the possible exposure, any genital symptoms, contact-lens use, and medicines or allergies.

Do not put leftover antibiotics or someone else’s eye drops into the eye. If genital trichomoniasis is confirmed, follow the prescribed treatment and ask about partner assessment. Avoid sexual contact until you receive clear instructions about treatment and reinfection prevention.

Get urgent eye care for vision changes, strong eye pain, marked light sensitivity, swelling, injury, or rapidly increasing redness. Seek prompt medical care for eye discharge or symptoms that do not settle after rinsing. Pelvic pain, fever, sores, or unexpected bleeding also need timely assessment.

Ask whether the eye needs specialist review, whether genital and eye samples are needed, whether other infections should be considered, how partners should be managed, and which warning signs should send you back urgently.
