The infection is caused by a parasite passed mainly through sexual contact. It can affect the vagina, vulva, cervix, or penis. Partners may need assessment and treatment, even when they feel well. Avoid sexual contact until your clinician says it is appropriate, so treatment can work and reinfection is less likely. Do not share leftover medicine or use scented washes inside the vagina.

Seek prompt medical care for pelvic pain, fever, sores, unusual bleeding, pain when urinating, or symptoms during pregnancy. Get urgent help for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or a rapidly worsening illness.
