What should you know about trich vag?

Trich vag usually refers to trichomoniasis, an infection that can cause vaginal discharge, irritation, or no symptoms. It is treatable, but symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

Trichomoniasis is caused by a microscopic parasite and commonly affects the vagina, cervix, urethra, or penis. Some people have burning with urination, discomfort during sex, redness, or an unusual discharge; others notice nothing. A vaginal discharge or vaginal itching can have several causes, so a clinician may use a swab or urine test to identify the infection.

Arrange a sexual-health or gynaecology assessment if you have symptoms or a recent partner has been diagnosed. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and avoid sex until treatment is complete and partners have been assessed or treated. Using condoms can reduce transmission. Do not use leftover antibiotics or vaginal products to self-treat, because they may mask symptoms without treating the cause.

Seek prompt medical care for pelvic pain, fever, pain during urination, bleeding after sex, or symptoms that return after treatment. If you are pregnant and notice unusual discharge, irritation, or pelvic discomfort, contact your maternity or gynaecology team promptly. Severe pain, fainting, or feeling very unwell needs urgent assessment.
