What should you know about trich rash?

Trichomoniasis can irritate genital tissues, but visible redness or a rash can also result from thrush, skin irritation, allergic reactions, or other infections. The appearance alone cannot tell you which cause is present. You may also notice discharge, an unusual odour, burning with urination, or discomfort during sex.

Some people have no symptoms. A clinician can examine the affected skin and collect a sample when appropriate, then match treatment to the cause.

Book a sexual-health or gynaecology visit for a new genital rash, especially after sexual contact or if a partner has trichomoniasis. Keep the area gently clean and dry, avoid fragranced washes and douching, and do not apply steroid or antifungal creams unless a clinician recommends them. Pause sex until you have advice and any prescribed treatment is complete.

Seek prompt care for pelvic pain, fever, sores, blisters, bleeding after sex, or pain when passing urine. Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly spreading swelling, heavy bleeding, fainting, or feeling seriously unwell. Pregnancy with a new rash or genital symptoms also warrants prompt clinical advice.

Ask whether the rash needs a swab or another test, whether trichomoniasis is possible without discharge, which products should be avoided, whether partners need treatment, and what changes should trigger a return visit.
