What should you know about trich in men?

Symptoms may include burning when passing urine, itching or irritation inside the penis, or discharge from the penis. A man can carry the infection without symptoms and still pass it to a sexual partner. These symptoms overlap with other infections, so appearance alone cannot identify trichomoniasis.

A clinician may assess your sexual history and collect a urine sample or a swab, depending on the symptoms and test available. A positive result identifies an infection that needs treatment; it does not establish when transmission happened or who had it first.

Arrange sexual-health or primary-care testing if a partner has trichomoniasis, you have symptoms, or you are concerned after sex without a barrier. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and tell the clinician about other medicines, allergies and any chance of pregnancy in a partner who may also need care.

Avoid sex until treatment instructions say it is appropriate and partners have been assessed. Partners may need treatment even when they feel well, because untreated infection can move between partners. A clinician can also discuss testing for other sexually transmitted infections.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, significant pain in the lower abdomen or testicles, blood in urine, inability to pass urine, or rapidly worsening swelling. These features can point to another condition that needs examination rather than self-treatment.

Ask which test is suitable, whether a current partner needs treatment, when sex can safely resume, whether other infection tests are appropriate, and what to do if symptoms remain after the prescribed course.
