What should you know about trich discharge?

Trichomoniasis is an infection of the genital area. When symptoms occur, discharge may be more noticeable than usual and can occur with irritation, itching, unpleasant odour, soreness, or burning during urination. Some people have no symptoms, so the absence of discharge does not exclude trich.

Book a sexual health or gynaecology appointment for discharge that is new, persistent, or associated with sexual exposure. A clinician may examine the area and collect a vaginal or urine sample. Share when the change began, whether there is pain or bleeding, and whether a partner has symptoms.

If trich is diagnosed, use the prescribed treatment as instructed and follow partner-management advice. Avoid sex until you are told it is appropriate. Do not douche or use scented products to mask the change, because these can worsen irritation or make symptoms harder to assess.

Seek prompt care for pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, bleeding after sex or outside your period, severe soreness, or symptoms during pregnancy. For milder discharge or itching without these warning signs, arrange an appointment rather than trying random medicines.

Ask what the sample tested for, whether other sexually transmitted infections should be checked, how partners should be treated, and which symptoms would mean you need review after treatment.
