Tricep bursitis

Short answer
Tricep bursitis is irritation and swelling of a small cushioning sac near the back of the elbow, often managed with activity changes and clinician-guided treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical area
- The back of the elbow near the triceps
- Avoid
- Direct pressure and self-draining the swelling
What may be happening
A bursa reduces rubbing between moving tissues. Repeated leaning on the elbow, direct impact, or forceful extension can irritate the area where the triceps meets the elbow. This may cause a tender lump, pain when straightening the arm, or swelling that presses against clothing or a hard surface. Infection, gout, tendon injury, and other elbow problems can look similar, so the location and appearance alone do not confirm bursitis. A clinician may examine movement and skin and, when needed, test fluid.
Practical treatment
Avoid leaning on the elbow and temporarily reduce activities that repeatedly load or bend it. A wrapped cold pack, elevation, and a soft elbow pad may ease irritation. A clinician may recommend Anti-Inflammatory Medication if it is suitable for you. Physiotherapy can restore comfortable movement and address contributing strength or technique issues. A Cortisone Injection may be considered in selected cases, while Joint Aspiration can remove fluid or help investigate infection; these procedures require careful assessment. Do not squeeze, puncture, or drain the swelling yourself.
When to seek care
Arrange a review if swelling persists, returns, or limits work, sleep, or arm movement. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, warmth, pus, severe pain, or feeling unwell, as an infected bursa needs prompt treatment. Sudden weakness after an injury, inability to straighten the elbow, or numbness in the hand also warrants prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the swelling is bursitis or a tendon problem, which activities to pause, whether fluid testing is needed, and which medicines or procedures fit your medical history.

Questions people ask
Can I drain tricep bursitis at home?
No. Puncturing the area can introduce infection and should only be considered by a trained clinician.
When might aspiration be used?
A clinician may use aspiration to remove fluid or help assess infection when the examination suggests it is needed.
