What should you know about trekk bronchiolitis?

Bronchiolitis mainly affects babies and young children. Swollen, mucus-filled airways can cause a runny nose followed by cough, faster breathing, feeding difficulty, or a whistling sound. A child may have a fever, but fever is not required. Symptoms can change over several days, so observe breathing effort, alertness, and fluid intake rather than the cough alone.

Offer small, frequent drinks or feeds and keep the child upright while awake. Clear visible nasal mucus gently before feeds and allow quiet rest. Avoid tobacco smoke and do not give cough medicines unless a clinician specifically advises them. A clinician may assess oxygen levels and hydration; a nebuliser is not automatically needed for every child.

Seek urgent help if the child is struggling for each breath, has pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, unusual drowsiness, or cannot keep feeds down. Arrange prompt medical assessment when breathing is persistently fast, the ribs pull in, wet nappies become noticeably less frequent, or symptoms are worsening. Fever in a very young baby needs urgent advice.

Ask what breathing changes should prompt immediate help, how to monitor hydration, whether a child health consultation is needed, and which medicines should be avoided. Mention the child’s age, feeding pattern, wet nappies, fever, and any previous breathing problems.
