Transferrin blood test

Transferrin binds iron and transports it through the bloodstream. The result is usually interpreted with haemoglobin, ferritin, serum iron and measures of iron-binding capacity. One result cannot establish the cause of tiredness, anaemia or an abnormal iron level by itself.

Transferrin may change with inflammation, liver problems, nutrition, pregnancy and some chronic illnesses. A lower or higher result therefore needs context from your symptoms, examination, medicines and other blood tests. Conditions affecting absorption or ongoing illness can also influence the overall iron picture.

Ask whether you need to fast and whether the sample should be taken at a particular time. Tell the clinician about supplements, recent illness, bleeding, heavy periods, digestive symptoms and medicines. Do not begin iron supplements or stop prescribed treatment solely because of a transferrin result.

After the result, ask how it fits with ferritin and the blood count. If iron deficiency or another cause is suspected, follow-up may include repeat blood tests, a dietary review or assessment for blood loss or absorption problems.

Arrange prompt care for marked breathlessness, fainting, chest pain, black or bloody stools, vomiting blood, or bleeding that will not stop. Contact a clinician if fatigue is worsening, you have unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal symptoms or repeated infections. These symptoms need assessment rather than interpretation from transferrin alone.

Ask why transferrin was requested, whether the result suggests low available iron or an inflammatory pattern, and which accompanying tests matter most. Ask when results should be reviewed and whether you need assessment for anaemia, kidney disease, coeliac disease or another underlying condition.
