What should you know about tranexamic acid hyperpigmentation treatment?

Hyperpigmentation describes skin that appears darker because pigment production or distribution has changed. Causes include inflammation after spots or injury, hormonal patterns, medication effects, and sun exposure. Tranexamic acid may reduce signals that encourage pigment production, but it does not address every cause of dark patches.

A clinician may recommend a topical product or, in selected cases, oral treatment. The plan depends on the patch pattern, skin tone, medical history, current medicines, and whether the skin is still inflamed. Treating irritation and its trigger can be as important as fading the colour.

Arrange assessment if the diagnosis is uncertain, especially when a patch is new or confined to one unusual area. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen and physical protection every day, and avoid picking, harsh scrubs, or untested bleaching mixtures. Apply products exactly as directed and introduce only one new active at a time when advised.

Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, clotting problems, migraines, medicines, and previous reactions. Other options may include a chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, IPL, picosecond laser, or hydroquinone, but each can worsen pigment when poorly selected or used on irritated skin.

Seek review for burning, swelling, blistering, a spreading rash, or marked colour change after treatment. Urgent care is needed for chest pain, trouble breathing, one-sided leg swelling, sudden weakness, or vision changes with oral medicine. Any patch that bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or changes quickly should be examined.
