What should you know about toy mri scanner?

A toy scanner cannot create clinical images or identify a tumour. It can show the shape of the scanner and give a child a chance to pretend to lie still while an adult describes the steps. Some children find role play easier than a verbal explanation, especially when unfamiliar noises and a narrow opening are expected.

A real MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images. The patient must remove metal items and tell the team about implants, metal fragments, or devices. Depending on the body area and the question being investigated, the team may discuss contrast, a breast MRI, or another imaging plan.

Use the toy to practise simple actions: removing jewellery, lying still, listening to instructions, and hearing that the scanner may make loud knocking sounds. Let the child choose a calm role-play script and bring a familiar comfort item if the imaging centre permits it. Ask the radiology team whether child-life support, headphones, a mirror, or a mock scanner is available.

Share the child's medical history, allergies, implants, previous difficulty with scans, and any need for sedation. Follow the centre's instructions about food, drink, and arrival time. A toy should support preparation, not replace the team's explanation.

A toy scanner itself does not require medical care. Before a real scan, tell staff immediately if the child has an implanted device, possible metal in the eye or body, or becomes distressed and cannot remain still. After contrast or sedation, follow the centre's discharge instructions and seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, fainting, or severe swelling.
