What should you know about total salpingectomy?

Short answer

A total salpingectomy removes both fallopian tubes while leaving the uterus and ovaries in place unless another procedure is planned; natural pregnancy cannot occur without fallopian tubes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the operation changes

The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries with the uterus and are normally where sperm and egg meet. Removing both tubes prevents that route. The ovaries may continue releasing hormones and eggs, and the uterus remains unless it is removed in a separate operation. Periods usually continue when the uterus and ovaries remain.

A total salpingectomy may be performed for an ectopic pregnancy, as part of permanent contraception, during another pelvic operation, or when a surgeon recommends removing the tubes for risk reduction. The reason determines whether one or both tubes are removed and whether other treatment is needed.

Planning and aftercare

Before surgery, clarify whether the procedure is one-sided or bilateral, whether the ovaries and uterus will remain, and how fertility plans are affected. Ask about alternatives if pregnancy is desired. Recovery depends on whether surgery is laparoscopic or open and whether another procedure is done at the same time. Follow wound and activity instructions, walk gently, and keep review appointments.

When to get medical help

Seek prompt advice for fever, worsening pain, persistent vomiting, heavy bleeding, difficulty passing urine, or an incision that is red, opening, or draining. Get emergency help for fainting, severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain with weakness, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, or a painful swollen leg.

Questions for your doctor

Are both tubes being removed? Will my ovaries and uterus remain? What will this mean for natural pregnancy and fertility treatment? Which surgical route is planned? What symptoms are expected after surgery, and which require urgent review? When can I return to work, exercise, driving, and sex?

Questions people ask

Can I become pregnant after both tubes are removed?

Natural conception cannot use the usual tube pathway after both tubes are removed, but fertility options should be discussed before surgery.

Does salpingectomy cause menopause?

Removing the tubes alone does not remove the ovaries, which are the organs that make most ovarian hormones.
