Topical corticosteroids for the face

A corticosteroid reduces inflammation, redness, and itch. On the face, however, prolonged or unsuitable use can make skin thinner, reveal small visible blood vessels, or trigger acne-like bumps and irritation around the mouth. Skin near the eyes requires particular care because medicine can migrate into the eye.

Facial redness is not always eczema. It may reflect contact dermatitis, infection, rosacea, or another condition that needs a different treatment. A steroid can temporarily change the appearance of some rashes and make the underlying problem harder to recognise.

Apply only to the diagnosed area, using a thin film and the schedule provided by your clinician. Keep it away from the eyelids, eyes, lips, and broken skin unless specifically directed. Do not use a leftover body steroid on the face or share a tube with another person.

Use a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturiser, and pause new fragranced cosmetics while the rash settles. If you have been using the product repeatedly, do not simply extend the course; arrange a review to confirm the diagnosis and plan a safer maintenance approach.

Contact a clinician if burning, swelling, new bumps, worsening redness, or skin thinning develops. Seek prompt assessment for a rash near the eye with eye pain, light sensitivity, vision change, or marked eyelid swelling. Rapid facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread blistering reaction needs urgent help.

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, which strength is suitable for the face, exactly where it may be applied, and when to stop. Check whether your cleanser, cosmetics, acne products, or other creams could irritate the area or interact with the treatment.
