Short answer

A very bloated stomach can result from trapped gas, constipation, food intolerance, or digestive disease, especially when symptoms keep returning.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common contributors
Gas, swallowed air, constipation, food intolerance, and altered gut movement
Useful record
Meals, timing, bowel changes, pain, medicines, and weight changes

What ongoing bloating can mean

Bloating is a feeling of fullness or visible abdominal swelling. Swallowed air, fizzy drinks, large meals, constipation, and changes in gut movement can all contribute. Food intolerance, lactose intolerance, coeliac disease, and irritable bowel syndrome may cause recurring bloating with changes in bowel habit or abdominal discomfort. Giardiasis can follow contaminated food or water and may bring diarrhoea. Helicobacter pylori infection can contribute to upper-abdominal discomfort, nausea, or indigestion. The timing of symptoms and associated bowel changes help guide assessment.

Bloating that is new, steadily worsening, or associated with weight loss, bleeding, vomiting, or persistent pain should not be managed only by removing foods at home.

Steps that may help

Eat slowly, chew thoroughly, reduce fizzy drinks, and consider smaller meals. Gentle movement and regular fluids may support bowel movement. Keep a short diary of foods, symptoms, stool pattern, medicines, and menstrual timing where relevant. Avoid strict elimination diets without advice because they can reduce nutrition and make the true trigger harder to identify. A clinician or nutrition counsellor can help test a suspected intolerance safely.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for severe or sudden abdominal pain, a hard swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, fainting, breathing difficulty, or blood in vomit or stool. Arrange a medical appointment for persistent or recurrent bloating, unexplained weight loss, diarrhoea that does not settle, nighttime symptoms, anaemia symptoms, or a strong family history of digestive disease. Testing may be needed before changing treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Could constipation, intolerance, coeliac disease, or IBS explain this pattern? Do I need stool, blood, or breath testing? Which foods should I avoid, if any? Would nutrition counselling help me plan changes safely?

Questions people ask

Does bloating always mean a food intolerance?

No. Gas, constipation, gut sensitivity, infection, and other digestive conditions can also cause it.

Should I remove dairy immediately?

Not necessarily. Record the pattern and seek advice before a prolonged elimination diet or testing change.
