What is a tomography PET scan?

A small amount of FDG Radiotracer is given, usually through a vein. After a quiet waiting period, the tracer collects in tissues that use glucose. You then lie on a table that moves through the PET-CT Scanner. The PET images show tracer distribution, while CT images help locate those areas precisely.

Increased tracer activity can occur for several reasons, including inflammation or infection, so an active area is not automatically cancer. The scan is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and other tests. It may help assess known disease, look for spread, or investigate a suspected Cancer of Unknown Primary.

Follow the centre's instructions about fasting, drinking water, medicines and exercise. Tell the team if you have diabetes, may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have difficulty lying still. Wear comfortable clothing and allow time for preparation, injection, rest and scanning. Remain relaxed and quiet during the uptake period because recent activity can affect the images.

After the scan, follow the team's advice about fluids and contact with others. Your clinician will explain whether the result changes the next step, which may include further imaging or a biopsy.

Tell staff immediately if you feel unwell after the injection, develop swelling or pain at the injection site, or feel faint. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or widespread hives. After going home, use the contact number provided for concerns that are persistent or worsening.
