What is a tomo-guided biopsy?

You usually lie face down or remain positioned so the breast is held steady. The imaging team takes views from different angles, numbs the skin, makes a small opening and advances a biopsy needle to the targeted area. Several small samples may be collected, then a dressing is placed. A marker can be left at the site so it remains easy to identify on later images.

The samples go to a laboratory. A pathologist examines the cells and may use Immunohistochemistry to identify features that help classify them. A biopsy result does not by itself describe every part of a possible tumour or determine the full treatment plan.

Tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, pregnancy, implanted devices and previous difficulty with local anaesthetic. Wear comfortable clothing and follow the centre's instructions about medicines and eating. Afterward, keep the dressing clean and dry as advised, use a cold pack if recommended, and avoid strenuous activity for the period your team gives you.

Ask when and how results will be shared. Depending on the findings, your care team may discuss MRI Scan, Genomic Tumour Profiling or Chemotherapy, but those decisions depend on the pathology and wider clinical picture.

Mild bruising, tenderness or a small amount of swelling can occur after a needle biopsy. Contact the clinic if pain is worsening, the area becomes increasingly red or hot, bleeding does not settle with firm pressure, or you develop fever, pus, breathlessness or a rapidly enlarging swelling. Follow the specific discharge instructions you were given.
