How can you avoid vomiting while travelling?

Short answer
To reduce vomiting while travelling, limit motion and strong smells, take small sips, eat lightly, and plan treatment before departure.

Why travel can make you sick
Motion sickness happens when signals from the eyes and inner ear do not agree during movement. Reading, looking down, or sitting where motion is strongest can worsen it. Anxiety, dehydration, alcohol, rich meals, and strong odours may add to nausea. Vomiting that begins with diarrhoea or cramps may instead fit gastroenteritis or food poisoning. Migraine can cause nausea with headache or light sensitivity, while gallstones or pancreatitis may cause significant upper abdominal pain. The pattern, timing, and other symptoms help a clinician distinguish these causes.
Before and during the journey
Choose a seat with the least movement available, face forward, and look at a stable distant point. Keep fresh air moving if possible and take regular breaks on road journeys. Avoid reading or using a screen while moving. Have plain, small meals rather than travelling on a very full or empty stomach, and sip water or an oral rehydration drink. Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a motion-sickness medicine suits you; some can cause drowsiness and may not be suitable with other medicines or health conditions.
When vomiting needs medical help
Seek urgent help for blood or green vomit, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a stiff neck with headache or fever, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or signs of serious dehydration such as very little urine and inability to keep fluids down. During travel, arrange prompt care if vomiting continues, prevents drinking, or follows a suspected contaminated meal with marked weakness.
Questions for your doctor
Does my pattern fit motion sickness or another cause? Which preventive medicine is appropriate for my journey, and when should I take it? How can I replace fluids if vomiting starts, and which warning signs mean I should seek care locally?
