Short answer

A titanium implant may be compatible with an MRI scanner, but the exact device and its safety conditions must be verified first.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Titanium and MRI

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images. Titanium is commonly used in some surgical implants because it is generally weakly attracted to magnets, yet the word titanium alone does not establish MRI safety. An implant may contain other materials, and its design, location, and fixation can affect scanning.

The radiology team needs the implant name, manufacturer, model, and placement when available. Some devices are labelled MR Safe, MR Conditional, or not suitable for MRI. Metal can also create image distortion near the implant, which may limit views of nearby tissue.

Before your scan

Tell the imaging centre about every implant, surgical clip, dental device, prosthesis, shrapnel exposure, and medication pump. Bring an implant card or operation record if you have one. Do not assume an old or small implant is acceptable without screening.

Remove metal objects and follow instructions about clothing, food, and contrast material. During the scan, remain still and report heating, pulling, pain, or distress through the call system. Ask whether contrast is planned and mention kidney problems, allergies, or pregnancy.

When to seek care

Tell staff immediately if an implant area feels hot, painful, pulled, or suddenly swollen during scanning. Afterward, seek prompt medical advice for new severe pain, weakness, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly worsening local change.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your exact implant is MR Safe or MR Conditional, what conditions apply, and whether another imaging test could answer the same question. Confirm whether the implant may affect image quality or require a special scan protocol.

Questions people ask

Can someone with a titanium implant have an MRI?

Often this is possible, but the exact implant and its approved scanning conditions must be checked first.

What should I bring to the appointment?

Bring an implant card, operation record, or device details, and tell staff about every other implanted object.
