Tiredness during pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Tiredness during pregnancy can result from physical and hormonal changes, but ongoing or severe fatigue should be assessed.

Why energy may change
Pregnancy can affect sleep, circulation, digestion, mood and the effort required for everyday movement. Nausea, pain, caring responsibilities and interrupted sleep may compound the effect. Fatigue can vary between trimesters and from person to person. It is not a measure of pregnancy health on its own. Anaemia, infection, dehydration, low mood, medication effects and other conditions can also cause tiredness, so a clinician may ask about diet, bleeding, sleep, mood and associated symptoms.
Managing tiredness safely
Plan rest before you are depleted, keep a regular sleep routine and share physically demanding tasks. Choose regular meals and fluids; if nausea is limiting intake, seek advice rather than becoming dehydrated. Gentle movement can support wellbeing when comfortable, but avoid overexertion and stop for dizziness, pain or breathlessness. Keep scheduled antenatal appointments and take only medicines or supplements recommended for your pregnancy. Mention fatigue that limits work, caring or personal care.
Warning symptoms
Get urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain or inability to keep fluids down. Contact your maternity team promptly for marked paleness, a racing heartbeat at rest, fever, reduced urination, worsening weakness or new severe headache. These symptoms require a clinical review and should not be dismissed as ordinary pregnancy tiredness.
Useful questions
Could I need testing for Anaemia or another cause? Is my fluid and food intake adequate? Which changes in energy, sleep or mood should I report between appointments?
