Tips to avoid constipation during pregnancy

Short answer
During pregnancy, fluids, fibre, regular movement, and a steady toilet routine can help prevent constipation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why bowel habits can change
Constipation may mean stools are hard or difficult to pass, bowel movements are less frequent than usual, or you feel that your bowel has not emptied fully. Pregnancy hormones can slow bowel movement, and iron supplements or reduced activity may add to the problem. Constipation is common, but ongoing symptoms can sometimes occur alongside dehydration, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Hypothyroidism, or Diverticular Disease.
Practical prevention
Drink regularly unless your maternity clinician has given you a fluid restriction. Add fibre gradually through vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains, and other foods you tolerate; increasing it suddenly can cause bloating. Walk or do pregnancy-appropriate movement most days if you are able. Go when you feel the urge, allow unhurried time, and use a small footstool to bring your knees above your hips. If iron tablets seem to worsen constipation, do not stop them yourself: ask whether the product or dose can be adjusted. A clinician can discuss Nutrition Counselling or a pregnancy-suitable laxative if lifestyle measures are not enough.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if constipation persists, repeatedly returns, or begins after a medicine change. Seek urgent advice for severe or increasing abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen with vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, blood mixed through the stool, fever, or marked weakness. During pregnancy, report symptoms that concern you to your maternity team, especially if you cannot keep fluids down.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how much fibre and fluid suit you, whether your iron supplement may be contributing, and which bowel medicines are safe during pregnancy. Mention your usual bowel pattern, stool appearance, pain, bleeding, and any changes in appetite or weight.

Questions people ask
Can iron tablets cause constipation in pregnancy?
They can contribute to constipation for some people. Ask your clinician about options rather than stopping prescribed iron yourself.
Is it safe to strain when constipated during pregnancy?
Try not to strain; allow time, use a footstool, and seek advice if stools remain difficult to pass.
