What should you know about tiny white hard bumps on skin?

Milia often feel like small, firm grains beneath the surface and are not usually red. Keratosis pilaris creates rough follicular bumps, commonly in repeated areas such as the upper arms or thighs. Folliculitis can be tender, itchy, or centred around a hair. Heat rash is linked with warmth and sweating. Lichen planus can cause itchy, differently coloured raised lesions. A skin professional distinguishes these patterns by examining the whole area, not just the white centre.

Keep the routine simple: gentle cleansing, light moisturising, and protection from rubbing. Avoid abrasive scrubs, squeezing, and home piercing. Stop any product that stings or seems to trigger more bumps. If the bumps are widespread or cosmetically troublesome, a clinician can discuss diagnosis-specific care. A supervised procedure, including cryotherapy for selected lesions, is not appropriate for every white bump.

Seek a clinical review for a hard bump that changes shape or colour, bleeds, forms a persistent crust, grows, or becomes painful. Get prompt help for spreading warmth and redness, pus with worsening tenderness, or fever. New facial swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency.

Ask whether the surface and distribution fit milia, keratosis pilaris, or folliculitis; whether you should use an exfoliating product; and whether removal could cause pigment change or scarring. Clarify when monitoring is enough.
