Tiny red spots on the penile head: what to know

The glans can become red after friction, vigorous washing, condoms, lubricants, or fragranced products. Inflammation may cause soreness, itching, burning, or a shiny rash. Spots that are new after sexual contact can also require testing for a sexually transmitted infection; appearance alone cannot confirm or exclude one. Acne and folliculitis are less typical on the glans because it has different skin and does not have ordinary hair follicles.

Rinse with lukewarm water, dry gently, and stop suspected irritants. Avoid scrubbing, squeezing, and applying steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams without advice. Avoid sexual contact until sores, discharge, or significant irritation have been assessed, and use clear information about recent exposures when speaking with a clinician. A sexual-health or dermatology service can examine the area and arrange appropriate tests.

Arrange a medical review if the spots persist, recur, spread, or follow unprotected sexual contact. Seek prompt care for blisters, open sores, pus, discharge, painful urination, marked swelling, fever, or difficulty retracting the foreskin. Sudden severe pain or inability to pass urine needs urgent attention.
