What should you know about tiny cherry angioma?

Cherry angiomas are commonly noticed on the trunk, arms, or other areas of skin. They may remain stable, become more prominent, or catch on clothing and bleed after minor trauma. Their colour comes from blood vessels close to the skin surface. A new red spot cannot be diagnosed reliably from colour alone, particularly if it is changing or has an unusual border.

A clinician can examine the spot with magnification and distinguish a likely cherry angioma from other vascular or pigmented lesions. Do not assume every red mark is the same type of growth.

Leave an uncomplicated spot alone, protect it from rubbing, and avoid picking at a scab over it. If it repeatedly catches, bleeds, or bothers you cosmetically, discuss removal with a dermatologist. Pulsed dye laser treatment and electrosurgery are possible approaches; the choice depends on the lesion, your skin, and the clinician’s examination. Home burning or cutting can cause bleeding, infection, or a scar.

Book an assessment if the spot changes quickly, develops an irregular outline, bleeds without clear trauma, forms a persistent sore, or differs markedly from your other spots. Seek urgent care for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure or for signs of infection such as increasing warmth, swelling, pus, or fever.

Ask whether the spot has the features of a cherry angioma, whether removal is medically useful or mainly cosmetic, and what mark or aftercare to expect. Mention any medicines or conditions that affect bleeding or healing.
