What should you know about tiny blood spots on your arm?

A spot that stays red or purple when you press it may be blood beneath the skin rather than a surface pimple. A raised, tender spot centred on a hair may instead fit irritation or folliculitis. A clinician may need to examine the area to tell these apart.

Small spots can follow scratching, friction from clothing, shaving, a minor bump, or pressure on the skin. Some harmless skin growths also look bright red and remain stable over time. Spots around hairs that are itchy, sore, swollen, or filled with pus may be inflamed follicles; related skin concerns include folliculitis and pimples.

Notice whether the marks are flat or raised, whether they blanch briefly under firm pressure, and whether new spots are appearing elsewhere. Also consider recent medicines, illness, unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding from the gums, because these details change how urgently the spots should be assessed.

Take a clear photograph in good light and note when the spots appeared. Avoid scratching, squeezing, shaving over, or repeatedly rubbing them. Use gentle cleanser and keep the skin protected from further friction. Do not start a steroid, antibiotic, or light-based treatment solely from a photograph or online description.

Arrange a routine dermatology or primary-care review if the spots persist, recur, spread, or have no clear trigger. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, including anything recently started, and mention recent infections or injuries.

Seek urgent medical advice if many new spots appear quickly, the marks do not fade with pressure and you feel unwell, or you also have fever, severe headache, confusion, breathing difficulty, or unusual bleeding. Prompt assessment is also sensible when spots follow a new medicine or occur with widespread bruising.

Get faster assessment for a spot that becomes hot, increasingly painful, rapidly swollen, or surrounded by spreading redness. Emergency care is appropriate for heavy bleeding, fainting, or serious breathing symptoms.
