What should you know about til melanoma?

Tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes are immune cells that have entered a tumour or its surrounding tissue. A pathology report may describe their presence, pattern, or activity. This finding is one part of melanoma assessment; it does not by itself determine the stage, outlook, or treatment plan.

Melanoma care may also involve examining the original lesion, checking nearby lymph nodes, and using scans when clinically indicated. The meaning of a TIL description depends on the report wording and the wider clinical picture.

Ask the treating team to explain the pathology report in plain language, including whether the lesion has been fully removed and whether further staging is needed. Surgical excision is commonly considered for a suspicious or confirmed skin lesion, with the amount of tissue guided by pathology and location.

Depending on stage and individual factors, care may include sentinel lymph node biopsy, additional surgery, immunotherapy, or structured follow-up. These choices are made by a specialist team rather than from the TIL description alone.

Arrange prompt assessment for a changing mole or pigmented lesion, especially if its shape, border, colour, size, or symptoms change. Bleeding, persistent crusting, ulceration, or a new firm lump near a melanoma site also warrants review. New severe headache, weakness, confusion, seizures, or vision changes require urgent medical attention.

Ask what TIL means in your specific report, which stage features are present, whether lymph-node assessment or imaging is needed, and why a proposed treatment is recommended. Ask how pathology results will affect follow-up and which new skin or general symptoms should trigger an earlier appointment.
