What should you know about thumb skin cracking?

Fissures may form at the thumb tip, around the nail, or across a joint where movement repeatedly pulls the skin apart. Hand washing, cleaning products, solvents, cold air, and frequent contact with water can remove protective oils. Itching, redness, scale, or cracks on other areas may point toward atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. A painful single crack can also follow a small injury or local irritation.

Apply a thick fragrance-free moisturiser after washing and before sleep, covering the thumb with a clean dressing when movement reopens the fissure. Use lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser, and protective gloves for detergents; allow damp gloves to dry between uses. Do not peel loose skin. Emollient therapy can be tailored when ordinary moisturising is not enough, and inflamed skin may need prescribed treatment.

Arrange an appointment if cracks keep returning, spread beyond the thumb, interfere with work, or fail to improve with careful protection. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, red streaks, or fever. A deep crack with numbness, reduced movement, or bleeding that will not stop needs timely assessment.
