Throat trichomoniasis: what to know

Throat trichomoniasis is not a typical presentation of this genital infection, so throat symptoms need assessment rather than an assumed diagnosis. Trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite and most often affects the vagina, vulva, cervix, or penis.

A sore throat, coating, swollen glands, or trouble swallowing can have many causes. A genital infection may cause unusual Vaginal Discharge, irritation, burning when urinating, or discomfort during sex, while some people have no symptoms. Throat symptoms alone do not establish trichomoniasis.

Tell the clinician about oral, vaginal, or anal sexual contact, new symptoms, and any partner diagnosis. Testing is chosen according to the body site and symptoms; a genital test may not answer a separate throat question.

Arrange sexual-health or gynaecology care for testing if you or a partner may have been exposed. Avoid sex until you have received advice about testing and treatment. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use a treatment intended for another infection.

If trichomoniasis is confirmed, take the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and follow advice about partner treatment and the timing of sex afterwards. Antibiotic Treatment for Pelvic Infection may be relevant to a different diagnosed infection, but it is not a substitute for an individual assessment.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing or swallowing saliva, rapidly worsening throat swelling, severe dehydration, high fever, severe pelvic pain, fainting, or pregnancy with significant pain or bleeding. These symptoms require prompt evaluation regardless of the suspected infection.
