What should you know about three lumps in neck?

Location helps narrow the possibilities: lumps in front of the neck may relate to the thyroid, while lumps along the sides may be lymph nodes. A clinician also considers whether each lump is tender, movable, firm, growing, or present for a long time. Neck lumps can occur with infection, but persistent or unexplained masses require proper assessment.

A neck lump can be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer found before its original site is clear. This does not mean that three lumps are cancer. Examination and testing are needed to distinguish these conditions from benign causes.

Arrange a medical appointment and note when each lump appeared, whether it has changed, and whether all three feel alike. Record recent sore throat, dental problems, skin infection, weight change, night sweating, voice change, or swallowing difficulty. Avoid repeatedly squeezing the lumps. Bring a list of medicines and previous scan or biopsy reports if available.

Get urgent help if swelling makes breathing difficult, swallowing saliva difficult, or causes rapidly worsening pain or voice change. Seek prompt clinical review for a lump that is enlarging, hard or fixed, associated with unexplained weight loss or night sweats, or still present after an illness has settled. Emergency symptoms should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask where each lump appears to arise from, whether an ultrasound or other scan is suitable, and whether a needle sample is needed. Ask what features make infection more likely, when results should be available, and which changes should lead you to return sooner. If the thyroid is involved, ask how thyroid function will be checked.
