Threadworms in human poop: what should you know?

Threadworms, also called pinworms, live mainly in the bowel. Adult worms may move around the anus at night, where they lay eggs and cause itching. A person may notice pale, moving threads on stool, toilet paper or near the anus, although mucus, food fibres and other material can look similar. Infection spreads when eggs reach the mouth from contaminated hands, bedding, clothing or surfaces. Children and household contacts can pass eggs between one another without obvious symptoms. Abdominal discomfort can occur, and disturbed sleep may affect daytime concentration. Bedwetting has several possible causes, so it should not be attributed to threadworms without an assessment.

Wash hands carefully with soap after using the toilet and before eating. Keep fingernails short, discourage nail biting, and shower in the morning if advised. Change underwear and sleepwear regularly, wash bedding and towels at a hot setting suitable for the fabric, and avoid shaking laundry. A pharmacist or GP can advise whether treatment is appropriate for the person and household, including how to handle repeat dosing. Do not rely on seeing worms in stool as proof, and do not share someone else's medicine.

Arrange a GP consultation if the finding is uncertain, itching continues after treatment advice, several household members are affected, or the person is very young, pregnant or has a condition affecting immunity. Seek prompt care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, marked weakness, blood in the stool, or a swollen abdomen. These features can have causes other than threadworms and need clinical assessment.
