Thoracic vertebroplasty: what to know

Thoracic vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure for a selected painful or weakened vertebra. Using imaging guidance, a clinician advances a needle through the skin into the vertebral body and injects [Bone Cement](/materials/bone-cement/). The cement hardens inside the bone and can provide internal support. A [Vertebral Compression Fracture](/conditions/vertebral-compression-fracture/) may be one reason it is considered, but imaging and the pattern of pain matter. [Kyphoplasty](/treatments/spine-care/kyphoplasty/) uses a different approach that creates a space before cement placement. Neither procedure is suitable for every back problem.

Tell the treating team about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, infection, pregnancy possibility, and difficulty lying flat. Follow instructions about fasting and arranging transport if sedation is planned. Afterward, keep the puncture site clean, follow activity guidance, and increase movement gradually. Mild soreness near the entry site can occur. Your clinician may also address bone strength and the underlying reason the vertebra weakened, because cement supports one area but does not rebuild overall bone health.

Seek prompt medical advice for fever, worsening redness or drainage at the needle site, severe or increasing back pain, or a new rash or breathing symptom. Obtain urgent care for new leg weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath. These symptoms need assessment for complications or another serious cause.
