What should you know about third degree burn scar removal?

A third-degree burn reaches through the full thickness of the skin. Healing can leave a firm, tight, raised, uneven, or differently coloured scar, and the scar may continue to change as it matures.

A tight scar over a joint can restrict movement. Scarring near the eyelids, mouth, neck, hands, or other high-movement areas may affect function as well as appearance. Itching, tenderness, dryness, or sensitivity can also persist.

Treatment is not always about removing every visible mark. The aim may be to release tight tissue, soften or flatten a scar, improve flexibility, protect fragile skin, or replace damaged tissue. Seek prompt medical care if the scar breaks down, develops a new open sore, becomes increasingly red or warm, drains fluid, swells quickly, or becomes newly painful. Fever or feeling unwell alongside a changing wound also needs assessment.
