Things to help pregnancy constipation

Short answer

Pregnancy constipation often improves with gradual fibre, adequate fluids, movement, and clinician-approved medicines. Changes in hormones, the growing uterus, reduced activity, iron supplements, and altered eating patterns can all slow bowel movements. Increase fibre gently so bloating does not become worse.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How constipation can feel in pregnancy

Constipation may mean hard stools, straining, fewer bowel movements, or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied. Pregnancy itself does not make every bowel change harmless. Dehydration can make stools harder, while conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Hypothyroidism, or Diverticular Disease may need separate assessment. Constipation is the symptom to describe clearly rather than a diagnosis to assume.

Practical steps

Drink regularly unless your maternity team has advised fluid restriction. Add fruit, vegetables, beans, whole grains, or another fibre source gradually, and take a gentle walk if comfortable. Respond to the urge to open your bowels and use a small footstool to support a relaxed position. Do not start laxatives, herbal products, or stop prescribed iron without checking with your midwife, obstetrician, or pharmacist. Nutrition Counselling can help tailor meals to pregnancy needs.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity team for persistent symptoms, repeated vomiting, worsening pain, marked swelling, blood in the stool, or inability to pass stool and gas. Seek prompt assessment if constipation comes with dizziness, very dark urine, or reduced urination, which may suggest Dehydration. Sudden severe abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding needs urgent maternity advice.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your iron supplement could be contributing, which bowel medicine is suitable in pregnancy, how much fibre and fluid fit your situation, and whether thyroid testing is appropriate. Bring a list of medicines and describe stool changes.

Questions people ask

Can I take a laxative while pregnant?

Some laxatives may be used in pregnancy, but the choice depends on your symptoms and health. Ask a maternity clinician or pharmacist before taking one.

Why can iron tablets worsen constipation?

Iron can make stools harder or less frequent in some people. Your clinician can review the preparation or plan without stopping needed treatment yourself.
