What should you know about thermoplastic splinting material sheets?

A therapist heats the sheet, shapes it around the relevant fingers, hand, wrist, or elbow, and lets it cool into form. The finished splint may limit a painful movement, protect healing tissue, or guide a joint while still allowing selected areas to move. Thickness, stiffness, padding, and the design depend on the diagnosis and the task the splint must support. It is not interchangeable with every cast or brace.

Wear the splint for the schedule provided and keep straps secure but comfortable. Check the skin after removal, especially around edges and pressure points. Keep the material away from high heat, and never reshape it yourself unless your therapist has shown you how. Increasing pain, rubbing, numbness, colour change, or swelling inside the splint calls for a fit review. Seek urgent care for a newly cold, blue, or numb hand, severe swelling, or pain after a fresh injury. Contact the treating team if a splint breaks, becomes loose, causes a pressure mark, or prevents the movement you were told to keep.
