What should you know about the cupping guru?

Cupping places cups on the skin to create suction. Dry cupping leaves the skin intact; wet cupping adds small skin punctures before suction. A session may leave round marks, tenderness, or temporary irritation. Cupping is sometimes used alongside movement therapy for muscle tightness, but it should not be presented as a substitute for finding the cause of ongoing pain.

A qualified practitioner should ask about your symptoms, medicines, skin condition, bleeding tendency, pregnancy, and other health concerns. Clean equipment, hand hygiene, clear consent, and an explanation of aftercare matter more than a memorable name or online reputation.

Ask whether the provider offers dry or wet cupping, who will perform it, and how single-use or sterilised equipment is handled. Describe the exact location and pattern of your pain. For muscle tightness, gentle activity and a physiotherapy assessment may be useful parts of a broader plan. Do not apply cupping over broken, infected, sunburned, or actively inflamed skin, and do not stop prescribed treatment to try it.

Seek prompt medical assessment for severe or rapidly worsening pain, weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, or a new injury. After cupping, contact a clinician if redness spreads, swelling increases, drainage appears, fever develops, or bleeding does not settle.
