What should you know about the coil hormones?

A copper intrauterine device uses copper rather than hormones to prevent pregnancy. A hormonal intrauterine system releases a progestogen locally in the womb. Neither device protects against sexually transmitted infections.

After insertion, cramping and spotting can occur. Copper devices may make periods heavier or more painful, while hormonal devices may cause irregular bleeding at first and later make periods lighter or absent.
