What should you know about TENS for gout?

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis that can cause sudden joint pain, warmth, redness, and swelling. TENS sends mild electrical pulses through skin pads and may alter pain signalling for a period of time. It does not lower uric acid, clear crystals, or prevent future attacks.

If a clinician agrees that TENS is suitable, follow the machine instructions, use clean intact skin, and begin with a gentle setting. Stop if the sensation becomes painful or the skin becomes irritated. Rest the joint in a comfortable position and follow the prescribed gout treatment plan; do not delay anti-inflammatory or urate-lowering care because TENS feels helpful.
