What should you know about temporal headache?

Temporal refers to the area at the side of the head, between the forehead and ear. A headache there can be dull, tight, throbbing, or tender. The pattern may occur with migraine, muscle tension, a cold, allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, or a general illness. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can also include headache with thirst, weakness, dizziness, or heavy sweating. These associated features are more informative than the location alone, and the same symptom can arise from different causes.

Write down when the pain starts, its side and quality, how long it lasts, and what happens before it. Rest away from glare and noise, relax the jaw and shoulders, drink fluids, and eat regularly. Treat congestion or fever only with products suitable for you; a pharmacist can check combinations and precautions. Avoid driving if pain, dizziness, or visual symptoms make it unsafe. If headaches repeat or affect daily activities, arrange a medical review with your symptom record.

Call emergency services for a sudden extreme headache, new weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, confusion, fainting, seizure, or a stiff neck with fever. Seek urgent assessment for vision loss, a painful red eye, severe dehydration symptoms, or headache following a head injury. A routine appointment is appropriate for recurring pain, a changed pattern, persistent fever, repeated vomiting, or headaches that increasingly interrupt sleep or normal activities.

Ask which features point toward migraine, tension, congestion, or illness; whether your medicines or habits may contribute; and what changes should prompt urgent care.
