Tea Tree for Skin Tags: What to Know

A skin tag is a soft, flesh-coloured growth that often hangs from a narrow base, commonly where skin rubs against skin or clothing. A tag can resemble other growths, so treating an uncertain lesion at home may delay the correct diagnosis. Tea tree oil may cause redness, stinging, peeling, or an allergic reaction. It cannot reliably distinguish a skin tag from a mole, wart, or another lesion.

Do not cut, tie off, burn, or repeatedly apply essential oil to a growth. A clinician can inspect it and explain whether removal is appropriate. Depending on its size, position, and attachment, options may include skin tag removal, cryotherapy, or electrosurgery. Keep the area clean, reduce friction, and photograph a changing lesion so you can describe what has happened.

Book an assessment if a growth changes colour or shape, grows quickly, bleeds without being rubbed, becomes persistently painful, or develops an open sore. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, warmth, pus, or fever. Get advice before home treatment when the diagnosis is uncertain or the lesion is near an eye.
