TCM Cupping Therapy

A practitioner places cups on selected skin areas and creates suction. The pull may increase local sensation and loosen the feeling of tight muscle. Round red or purple marks can remain for several days; they are a treatment effect, not a measure of how severe the problem is. Dry cupping leaves the skin intact, while wet cupping involves skin piercing and carries additional hygiene and bleeding concerns. Evidence for benefit varies by condition.

Choose a trained practitioner who asks about medicines, skin health, pregnancy, bleeding problems, and other conditions. Do not place cups over broken skin, a fresh wound, an active rash, or an area with reduced sensation. Drink normally, keep the marked skin clean, and avoid rubbing it vigorously. Cupping should complement evaluation and exercise when needed, not delay care for persistent Back Muscle Spasm or Upper Back Pain.

Contact a clinician if a mark becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, blistered, or produces discharge. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, fainting, severe allergic symptoms, or unusual bleeding. Persistent back pain, weakness, numbness, fever, or pain after an injury deserves medical assessment rather than repeated cupping.
