What is a DEXA scan?

The scanner compares the amount of mineral in your bones with reference values and produces a report for your clinician. Lower density can mean bones are less strong, but the result is considered with age, medical history, previous fractures and medicines. It is a measurement, not a complete prediction of what will happen.

A DEXA scan may be suggested after a fragility fracture, during treatment monitoring, or when a condition or hormonal change can affect bone health. Premature ovarian insufficiency is one example in which bone protection may need discussion.

Wear comfortable clothing and tell the imaging team if you might be pregnant, recently had an examination using contrast material, or take calcium supplements. Follow the service's instructions about supplements and food. During the scan you lie still while the scanner passes over the selected areas; the procedure is usually brief and does not require an injection.

Ask when and how the report will be explained. A result may lead to advice about exercise, nutrition, fall prevention, repeat monitoring or prescribed treatment. Do not start or stop bone medicine based on the scan report without clinical guidance.

A DEXA scan is usually planned rather than urgent. Contact a clinician promptly after a new fracture, sudden severe back or hip pain, loss of height or difficulty walking. Seek urgent help after a fall if you cannot stand, have severe pain, numbness or weakness, or suspect a head injury.
