What should you know about tape stitches for cuts?

They may be considered when a cut is shallow, clean, and has edges that come together without much tension. A clinician may choose them alone or after another method has brought the wound edges into position.

Tape stitches, also called adhesive wound-closure strips, sit across the cut rather than passing through the skin. Their pull supports the surface while the body repairs the tissues underneath. They are different from surgical sutures, which use thread placed through the skin and may need removal depending on the type and location.

Tape is less suitable when the wound is deep, gaping, contaminated, wet, bleeding heavily, or located where movement repeatedly pulls the skin apart. Bites, punctures, and cuts with possible damage to a tendon, nerve, blood vessel, eye, or joint need assessment rather than home closure.

Keep the strips clean and dry at first, and avoid soaking the area in a bath, pool, or sea. Follow the clinician’s instructions about washing and changing any covering. Do not pick at the tape or pull it off early; allow it to loosen as advised. Avoid stretching the nearby skin, and keep the wound protected from rubbing.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, the cut opens widely, tissue is visible, or the wound followed a bite, puncture, crush injury, or dirty object. Seek urgent help for numbness, loss of movement, pale or blue skin beyond the wound, or severe pain.

Contact a clinician if redness spreads, swelling or warmth increases, pus appears, fever develops, or the wound becomes more painful after initial improvement. Ask whether your tetanus vaccination is up to date when the cut was dirty, deep, or caused by an object that broke the skin.
