What should you know about tape over stitches?

A clinician may place adhesive strips across or beside a stitched cut to add gentle support. The strips do not replace the stitches; they help limit rubbing, catching, and tension as the skin becomes stronger. Some tape is also used to hold a dressing in place. The choice depends on the wound, its location, the type of suture, and the condition of the surrounding skin.

Tape can loosen at the edges as it gets wet or as the skin releases oil. That does not automatically mean the wound has opened. Look for separation of the skin, fresh bleeding, or fluid rather than judging the repair by the tape alone.

Follow the instructions given when the wound was closed. Keep the area clean and avoid soaking it unless your clinician says this is allowed. Pat it dry instead of rubbing over the tape. Do not pull off strips that are still firmly attached, and do not add household glue or extra adhesive over the wound. Protect the area from snagging clothing and avoid activity that stretches the repaired skin.

If a dressing becomes wet, dirty, or loose, ask how it should be changed. The stitches may be absorbable or may need removal at a planned review. Seek urgent help for spreading redness, pus-like drainage, fever, red streaks, numbness, or difficulty moving the nearby body part. A rash, blistering, or intense itching under the adhesive may signal a reaction and should be assessed if it persists.

Ask how long the tape should stay on, whether the wound may get wet, and what to do if an edge lifts. Confirm whether your stitches dissolve or need removal, which activities to avoid, and which changes should prompt a review.
