Tamoxifen for ovulation induction

Tamoxifen changes oestrogen signalling, which can encourage the brain and ovaries to coordinate an ovulatory cycle. It is not suitable for every fertility situation. The clinician first considers ovulation history, ovarian reserve, semen factors, fallopian-tube status, and causes such as anovulation or polycystic ovary syndrome. Other options may include clomifene citrate, letrozole, or a monitored treatment plan.

Take tamoxifen only on the cycle days and dose provided by your fertility team. Attend monitoring appointments if ultrasound or blood tests are arranged; these help show whether a follicle is developing and help time intercourse or IUI. Report visual symptoms, severe pelvic pain, or unexpected bleeding. Tell the team about pregnancy possibility and all medicines or supplements before starting another cycle.

Contact your fertility clinic promptly for severe pelvic pain, marked abdominal swelling, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. New visual changes need medical advice because they can affect whether treatment should continue. Emergency symptoms such as collapse or sudden breathlessness require immediate care.

Ask why tamoxifen is being considered for you, how ovulation will be confirmed, and how many monitored cycles are sensible before reviewing the plan. Discuss alternatives, the chance of multiple follicles, what happens if a dose is missed, and whether IUI or another approach is appropriate.
