Ta bladder cancer: what to know

Ta describes a papillary tumour that is limited to the innermost bladder lining and has not grown into the bladder muscle. The grade, number and size of tumours, whether they have returned, and the completeness of removal affect the next recommendation. A biopsy or resection gives the pathology information needed to plan care.

Follow the urology plan for examination, tissue analysis and surveillance. Contact your urology team promptly for visible blood in the urine, clots, fever after a bladder procedure, burning that is worsening, or new difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have heavy bleeding, severe lower abdominal pain, fever with chills, or feel faint. These symptoms need assessment and do not establish how advanced a tumour is.
